Our Participation

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, November 11-22, 2024. This pivotal climate summit will unite nations and organizations worldwide to tackle the pressing challenges of climate change.

Key themes of COP29 center on enhancing climate finance ambition, enabling action and results, and empowering inclusivity.

As a Fund that is constituted under the convention and serving the Paris agreement, the Adaptation Fund (AF) will play an active role at COP29, highlighting the importance and impacts of funding adaptation action on the ground.

The Fund will host and participate in a variety of engaging side events highlighting advances in adaptation action, as well as priorities, challenges and opportunities in the vulnerable countries that it supports. It will also highlight the opportunities for accessing adaptation funding, in particular new funding modalities adopted by the Board to channel funding to local actors and foster innovation in adaptation. Additionally, in partnership with the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), Global Environment Facility (GEF), and Green Climate Fund (GCF), the AF will co-host a dedicated pavilion to foster collaboration and dialogue among stakeholders.

AF and Azerbaijan

The AF approved the project ‘Building Climate Resilient Cities and Communities in the Republic of Azerbaijan’ at its October 10-11 board meeting. The project aims to enhance climate change adaptation and resilience among local cities and communities in Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea coast. The project is breaking ground as the first AF funded project in the country and will be carried out by UN-Habitat. It also highlights the increasing levels of vulnerabilities and demand for adaptation funding in developing countries as climate change impacts worsen.

About the Adaptation Fund

A global leader in adaptation finance, the AF has been in operations for 17 years empowering vulnerable countries to adapt and build resilience to climate change through concrete actions on the ground and innovative programs. It has committed US$ 1.2 billion in grant funding to over 180 adaptation projects, nearly half in least developed countries or small island developing states. It pioneered Direct Access, building country ownership in adaptation, and continues to evolve to countries’ needs by offering additional funding windows beyond its regular projects – including innovation and learning in adaptation, project scale-up, and locally led adaptation.

The Fund faces record demand for its proven work, with a pipeline of projects in development that have not yet been funded nearing US$ 500 million.
